Florida can seem like a funny place, with its beautiful beaches and lily-white tourists, the natural beauty of the Everglades, and a seedy underside which the public tends to forget.
They are so busy looking at brochures of Disney World that they forget — Florida is like any other state. When it comes to addiction, there are more sufferers than anyone ever knows, and many of them wear such a great disguise they take the secret to their early graves.
Addiction Rehabilitation in Florida
Florida addiction centers are divided by city, financial considerations, sometimes by the addictive substance in question, and other factors. For instance, a methadone center caters to heroin addicts who are unable to wean off of their drug in the usual way. Their clients might take around a year to wean very slowly before finally having the courage or physical stability to face sobriety.
Florida is a multi-cultural, multi-lingual community. As such, many rehab facilities offer multi-lingual services. This allows individuals to speak about emotional issues in their native tongue, such as Spanish or Arabic.
Many urban parts of Florida are the locations for homeless shelters and they are operated by a local church or charity. These make treatment accessible to people with no insurance, no friends, no family, and no hope otherwise. They are not expected to accept or profess Christian faith if they enter a church-based shelter for detox and counseling, but their programs are run by church staff and clergy.
A Christian Center
Addicts who relapse will often say they could not handle the guilt they feel even years in light of immoral or illegal acts committed to acquire drugs or money for drugs. They remember assaulting someone when their withdrawal experience left them aggressive and possibly psychotic.
Christian counselors emphasize that guilt is not a legitimate feeling. Responsibility, yes: we should all accept accountability for our own actions. Having done this, made reparations, and (if they accept Christ) repented of sin, it is time to give up guilt and move forward. To some people, this is a groundbreaking realization: that they do not have to punish themselves anymore.
Any traditional rehabilitation center for addicts in Florida or elsewhere is going to operate on a twelve-step model. This was originally a Christian approach to overcoming alcoholism, but it was adopted by drug addicts and adapted by agnostics and individuals following other religions.
The format of twelve-step recovery is to start by admitting powerlessness, acknowledging that a higher power will restore a person spiritually, and that it is important to work on inner growth.
Addicts must admit they are addicted, accept that they must change, and do what they can to make amends to anyone who was affected by their behavior when they abused drugs or alcohol. To adopt the twelve-step model is to also accept that recovery is ongoing.
Caring for Adolescent Addicts in Florida
Young people addicted to drugs have no interest in sitting around with adults over the age of 25 (otherwise known as old people to a teenager) and talking about their problems. A teenager’s problems are often different from adult ones, though not always as different as one might suspect.
Some adolescent addicts are trying to cope with the trauma of having been abused. The difference is often more in the approach. For boys especially, who frequently struggle to sit still and learn in a conventional setting, it is important to make learning experiential and active.
This is what therapists aim to do, even with young girls. There has to be some component of class-based therapy and education, but a lot of what young people need to learn can be taught during outdoor activities and adventures. They learn more because their studies are automatically applied to physical, social situations, and it is in society where addicts experience and cause the most problems.
To really understand how to cooperate, talk to people, and listen, a student has to be with other people, but in situations where it is natural to pursue this type of training. Examples would be during team activities, rock climbing, and other physical pursuits.
